Satisfy the senses

If you’re looking to accommodate relaxing family outings or adrenalin-full wakeboard weekends, you could do a whole lot worse than the US-made Bayliner 2150 BR (bow rider). With style, class, and its own mixture of pizzazz, what more might you want?

Built in the United States since 1957, Bayliner (which is part of the gigantic Brunswick stable), is somewhere in the category of the oldest operating boat builders. The company has often led the way in the design stakes, and in this case, the 2150’s most impressive feature is the size and layout of the cockpit and seating arrangement.
The 215 comes primed for action; with MerCruiser power and some of the best traits of bow rider engineering, the 215 can deliver water sport thrills one moment and the delight of leisure cruising the next.
For sporting thrills or family fun, Bayliner’s 2150 BR has got you covered.

Review

Bayliner themselves reckon that this boat combines the best of bow rider engineering and technology with an all-new design that will please mom and the kids just as much as the dedicated wakeboard warriors.
With seating for up to nine people, the 2150 BR features a heap load of storage space. Convenient in-floor storage for your wakeboards and ski’s allows you to stow gear without sacrificing space, and you’ll find even more room for your boating gear beneath the bow seat cushions.
When you want to kick-start a party, you can! With a quality waterproof stereo system, which Bayliner says is one of the best in the business, you can be assured that the 2150 is built to be eye- and ear-catching on the water. Featuring Plug & Play compatibility with iPods and other MP3 players, this system pumps out the tunes through “directionally aimed” speakers. To ensure you only hear what you want, a new sealed engine cover keeps engine noise to an absolute minimum.
The 2150 boasts two seating options: Standard and Sport. As reviewed, the Sport seating features a unique L-shaped lounge, which maximises onboard comfort and allows passengers to get as comfortable as they like.
The custom-formed dash panel of the 2150 has easy-to-read gauges designed with anti-glare technology. The 2150 BR’s controls and instrument panel are right where you want them in the ergonomically-designed helm, which also features a sumptuous bucket-style seat with flip-up bolster and protected vinyl upholstery. The plush helm seat swivels when the skipper wants to join the fun and the flip-up bolster offers a prime position for driving – even if you don’t need the extra height.
The dash-mounted water depth meter with built-in shallow water alarm, provides both audio and video display of water depth. This is particularly helpful when navigating in shallower sections of waterways.
A custom-fitted, removable, all-weather carpet on the deck is comfortable to walk on with bare feet, and requires very little maintenance. What’s more, the carpeting is also effective in reducing engine noise that is transmitted through the cockpit floor.
The stainless steel hardware upgrade (standard from Leisure Marine) includes through-hull fittings, grab rails, gunwale trim and flush-mounted beverage holders for standard and oversized containers. The stainless steel trim package adds increased durability and further appeal.
Enhanced hull side graphics increases the visual aspect both on and off the water.
With an LOA of 6.22 metres and a beam of 2.43 metres, the 2150 BR tips the scales at 1300 kg (dry) – which opens up a range of tow vehicles you may use to tow.Satisfy the senses

Performance

When it comes to powerplants, you won’t be disappointed by the unit charged to rocket the 2150 BR along the water. The standard 5.0-litre MPI MerCruiser churns out some 260HP, providing good grunt to pull boarders out of the water. This MerCruiser inboard set pulses racing, without burning a hole in your back pocket. The 2150 BR has a fuel capacity of 140 litres, which should see your boating mates running on empty long before the boat does!
The craft is almost as stable at standstill as she as speed – and the hull does a great job in cutting through wakes in chop situations.
The Bayliner 2150 is reasonably light for her size, but it doesn’t seem like she has lost any engineering strength for it. Owing to her weight and perfectly paired MerCruiser motor, this craft has plenty of power to get up and go, or tow.

Finishing touches

Is water-sports more your game? If so, the 2150 is ready – especially when it’s fitted with the Flight Series package which includes a top-class wakeboard tower, a full-length extended swim platform, sporty graphics and a sun canopy.
All Bayliner 2150’s imported by Leisure Marine come complete with the Flight Series package, which to me, is really the only way to go for the amount of value you add to the craft.Review

Conclusion

Overall, the Bayliner 215 is a big and friendly all-rounder with plenty of space for a big crew. Take your water sports capabilities to new heights and be ready to set the standard.
Throw in a maintenance-free interior and an attractive starting price of R500 000 depending on options – and the 215 BR adds up to a great leisure option, no matter which way you look at it. For more information, contact Leisure Marine on (011) 318 8252/3.
