The sea is a very powerful force (as experienced recently in and around the Western Cape coastline recently), and it can unleash itself very quickly in the form of large swells, strong currents and high winds.
If there is no chance of outrunning the heavy weather, there are many effective ways to safely navigate through it, but, developing a “feel for the weather”, in combination with receiving weather reports on the VHF radio, will stand any skipper in good stead.
If there is no other solution than to brave the storm, then at least you should be properly prepared for any eventuality such as the ‘Red Moon’ phenomena mentioned earlier.
