Boating Tips: Trailer Trash

Being able to tow or trailer your boat will definitely add value to the overall enjoyment of your favourite pastime. A trailer allows you the freedom of visiting the boating spots of your choice and exploring a variety of new waterways, but purchasing a trailer can have many pitfalls. We went in search of the best possible ways to purchase a trailer to score that perfect ‘ten’.

Proper Paperwork

It is imperative to check that the paperwork of the trailer you are purchasing is in order. The chassis number on the registration certificate of the trailer needs to match the number stamped onto the trailer itself. If there is a conflict with these numbers and it is picked up during the licensing process of the trailer, it will become necessary for the trailer to go through police clearance. These are issues, as a buyer, which you want to avoid at all costs.

One way of circumventing this problem is purchasing your trailer from a reputable boat dealer. Purchasing from a reputable dealer offers the buyer much more recourse than when buying privately. If you do decide to make a private purchase, ensure that the trailer is legit and has all the required paperwork and a roadworthy certificate before you sign on the dotted line.
