Destination of the Month: Langebaan

Dubbed the ‘Jewel of the West Coast’, Langebaan is an easy one-hour drive from Cape Town and the bustling town has attractions for the whole family.

The natural attractions of Langebaan lure outdoor lovers and watersport enthusiasts in their droves, while unique beach restaurants, abundant seafood and shopping for curios, crafts or clothing entice others.

Other attractions adults might enjoy include the well known Club Mykonos casino, the Golf & Country club, or perhaps some horse riding on the beach.

Almost year-round sunshine, safe waters and reliable winds make Langebaan a paradise for watersports lovers – particularly kite surfers, wind surfers, kayakers, yachtsmen, water skiers and fishermen. The often flat, dam-like water of Langebaan attracts a multitude of kitesurfers every season and it is also the ideal place to learn and perhaps get a few lessons. Fishermen can enjoy fishing from the surf, rocks or boat in Langebaan with a huge variety of species to target. If you don’t have your own boat, book ahead with one of the many reputable charters available in this West Coast town.

The tidal mud flats of the lagoon also attract thousands of migratory birds every year, and resident species are prolific and include greater and lesser flamingos. The world’s largest breeding colony of black harriers also frequents the area. Incidentally, Langebaan is an internationally acclaimed Ramsar Site for its importance as a wetland.
