Inanda Dam: The great escape to tranquility

Set a few kilometres away from the suburb of Hillcrest in Durban is the Inanda Dam and Resort. Apart from the myriad activities available to holidaymakers, Inanda Dam also plays host to the second overnight stop during the Dusi Canoe Marathon. Inanda Dam is cradled in the Valley of a Thousand Hills and paints a most beautiful scenic picture for all who visit. The dam also hosts the Inanda Bass Classic Fishing Tournament every year towards the end of April and this attracts hundreds of entrants from all over South Africa. The Triple Challenge also takes place here and is one of South Africa’s toughest endurance races.

Inanda Dam offers numerous attractions which range from excellent fishing opportunities, to power boating, swimming and many other water sports. Mountain biking and nature trails are the order of the day, or simply reclining in your camping chair at the water’s edge offers rest and relaxation for those needing a well deserved break. Take a walk around the Wushwini Arts and Culture Centre to get some wonderful insights into this picturesque area.

STAY AT INANDA DAM

There are a variety of accommodation options such as Safari-style tented accommodation which enjoys scenic views of the dam allowing patrons to sip on hot coffee early in the morning while the sun pops its head above the horizon line and local birdlife sings its welcoming praises. If camping or caravanning is your desire, then Inanda Dam offers some prime sites at the water’s edge offering stunning views of the surrounding hills and dam. There are three ablution facilities in the camping area which are fully-serviced and clean. 40 electrical campsites are available.

Waterskiing, SUPs, Jetskis and power boats all feature highly at Inanda Dam and the fishing for bream, carp, barbell, bass and eel is some of the best in South Africa. Picnic spots abound and braai facilities are available for those wanting to light a fire. Just remember to bring your own grid. There are a variety of short and long trails suited to all types of fitness levels and the abundant birdlife in the area makes this a birder’s paradise.

The largest bass caught at Inanda Dam weighed in at 5.23 kg.

HOW TO GET THERE

The resort lies within the Valley of a Thousand Hills just beyond Hillcrest, 43 km from Durban, 25 km from Pinetown and 70km from Pietermaritzburg.
