Dream Waterski Sites of South Africa

For those skiers and wakeboarders who dream of dead calm water, a beautiful backdrop, and carving up some silver spray – scouring the internet for such places but finding nothing; relax, we’ve found them for you.

In our travels around South Africa in search of special places and settings we were truly in awe of the beautiful setting with the mountain as a backdrop skiing at Lac du Soleil near Cape Town and followed that up last month, skiing in a piece of paradise at Bird Valley with its surrounding forests outside Pietermaritzburg. Our next stop is Skiworld situated in Gauteng right amidst the hustle and bustle of Benoni.

This is an interesting ski site, not so much due to the setting or almost-always awless conditions for picture perfect slalom spray, but due to the fact that Skiworld has consistently been the premier training facility of nearly all the best slalom waterskiers that have been promoted to obtaining National Colours over the past 15 years. These include skiers from all age groups starting from eight to 70 years old. They also include skiers who have reached tremendous accolades on the world stage of slalom, trick and jump skiing among whom the most notable are Sean Bezuidenhoud, a former Junior World Slalom Champion and US Masters competitor; Gabriella Viljoen, a US Masters Silver medallist and third ranked Junior Woman slalom skier; Jan Johnson, a European Senior Women slalom champion and ranked second on the International Waterski Federation Rankings list; Eamon van der Merwe – current sixth-ranked Junior slalom skier and competitor at the May 2014 US Junior Masters, among many others.

In addition, numerous National slalom record holders and virtually every National Team skier has passed through or learned a large part of their trade being coached by Don Shead, South Africa’s premier tournament waterski coach and owner of Skiworld.
