Set a short distance from the town of Howick, about 20 minutes from Pietermarizburg, lies the picturesque Midmar Dam, the perfect venue for the entire family to spend a holiday relaxing and ridding themselves of the stresses of city life. There are a variety of accommodation options available at the dam which range from self-catering lakeside chalets in two, four, fi ve and six bedroom options, and all chalets are positioned at the lakeside which makes for the idyllic setting for morning sunrises or evenings sundowners. There are two all-weather tennis courts, and the chalets are equipped with DSTV and other facilities to make your stay that much more comfortable.

There are many scenic attractions on the Midlands Meander tourist route in KwaZulu-Natal and Midmar is situated at the gateway to the Midlands. There are numerous fun activities to enjoy at the dam and these include fishing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, kitesurfing and of course power boating. Bring your boat and trailer with you to Midmar and enjoy the complete holiday spent fishing and partaking in the water sports you most enjoy. Fishing enthusiasts will find an abundance of Bluegill, Carp, Scalies and Bass munching on their bait and lures.

Don’t forget to bring your rods and other tackle. Midmar Dam also hosts some spectacularly scenic mountain biking routes and the rolling lawns around the dam are perfect for a family picnic where you can sip on your favourite beverages. Day visitors will particularly enjoy the shady picnic sites and spend a relaxing day at the water’s edge. When the sun dips behind the horizon, light the braai fire and top up your drink in anticipation of the “tall stories” that are sure to abound. Overnight visitors are required to check in at reception on their arrival and accommodation costs are payable on arrival. Any supplies can be obtained from the town of Howick and fuel is available 2 kilometres from the main gate. Unfortunately no pets are allowed at Midmar Dam and any firearms must be declared on entry.

To get to Midmar Dam by road from the N3 highway, take the R103 Howick / Midmar off-ramp and at the stop sign, follow the signs towards Midmar Dam, which is about 4km further along the route.
