LET THE TURQUOISE WATERS TICKLE YOUR TOES
Langebaan is one of the favourite holiday destinations in South Africa offering warm turquoise waters that flow gently in and out of the lagoon. It’s a short distance from Cape Town and offers some of the best watersports, crayfish, sea birds and restaurants. Situated on the Cape West coast, Langebaan is truly a place where you can truly feel the soft white sand between your toes as you wade into the invigorating waters of the lagoon.
From the indigenous Khoi to French sailors who frequented Langebaan, it’s history is an interesting one, steeped in adventure. Langebaan had the biggest whaling station in the southern hemisphere and it wasn’t quite as peaceful as it is today, but since the closure of the whaling station, Langebaan has become the idyllic seaside getaway that goes from a quiet town for most of the year to a bustling seasonal holiday town. From the beauty of the West Coast National Park to the rustic fisherman’s cottages, Langebaan offers a wonderful mix of scenic beauty with that small town feel.
Visitors are never short of activities with numerous watersports on the go at any given time, various fishing opportunities and even a casino for those who feel like spending their hardearned cash. Horse riding, jestskiing, kite-surfing, boating and canoeing and scenic walks are the order of the day, and the day after that.
During the annual west coast flower season between July and September, the landscape is transformed into an explosion of colour when the wild flowers are in bloom. And once you’ve had your fill of floral fantasy, keep and eye out for the majestic Southern Right Whales in the bay who return to calve each year.
The small settlement of Churchhaven and the pretty Kraalbaai are both easily reached by paddling or sailing across the lagoon, or by road through the national park. Kraalbaai is home to many houseboats which can be rented for those wanting to have a holiday on the water.
The scenic beauty of Langebaan is a holidaymaker’s dream and offers a variety of wonderful activities for the whole family. This west coast destination is the perfect place to let any thoughts of work deadlines, meetings and general city life stress dissipate into pure relaxation. Whether you’re flying a kite on the beach, chartering a boat for a sunset cruise of fly fishing in the area, you’ll be enjoying yourself because that’s what Langebaan does best.
